Blockchain was never a freedom problem. It was a plumbing problem. And whoever owns the plumbing owns the house.

That sentence would have sounded like heresy in 2025, when the entire industry still argued about freedom — who controlled your keys, who could censor your transactions, whether a coin was truly "yours." The argument was sincere. It was also looking in the wrong direction. By 2036, almost nobody loses their keys and almost nobody is censored. What most people have instead is a daily financial life routed, priced, and quietly optimized by infrastructure they cannot see and do not govern. The sovereignty was delivered. The landlords came with it.

The renaissance that everyone predicted, and the one nobody did

The conventional wisdom of the mid-2020s came in two flavors, and both were wrong.

The maximalists predicted a winner. One chain would absorb the others — Bitcoin as digital gold, or Ethereum as the world computer, or some Solana-speed upstart — and the losers would fade. The pluralists predicted a flat, sprawling commons: hundreds of specialized chains, no center, power dissolved into the mesh.

Neither happened. The chains did multiply — by the mid-2020s there were already more than a hundred active networks, with assets scattered across all of them.1 But multiplication didn't dissolve power. It relocated it. The decisive layer turned out not to be any chain at all, but the messaging fabric between the chains — the cross-chain routers that decide, transaction by transaction, which network carries your value and on what terms. The fight everyone watched was over the rooms. The fight that mattered was over the hallways.

Force one: abstraction made the complexity disappear

The first force was a genuine engineering triumph, and it matters because the reversal depends on it.

Two technologies did the work. Account abstraction turned the crypto wallet from a hostile instrument — seed phrases, gas, nonces — into something that behaved like a banking app, letting a smart account batch actions, sponsor its own fees, and recover from a lost key.2 Roughly twenty million such wallets were deployed in 2024 alone, and Ethereum's 2025 Pectra upgrade pulled ordinary accounts into the same model.3 Chain abstraction did the matching work one layer up, so a user never had to know which network a payment actually crossed.

This is the part the original promise got right. Difficulty was what kept blockchains out of normal life, and abstraction killed difficulty. The technology became, in the truest sense, invisible — which is what every successful technology eventually achieves. Nobody thinks about TCP/IP to send an email.

Force two: invisibility is a business, and it concentrates

Here is the law the engineers underrated. Coase taught it in 1937: firms exist because using the open market is itself costly — you pay to search, to bargain, to enforce — and an organization that absorbs those costs will grow until its own coordination expenses catch up.4 Cross-chain routing is a transaction-cost machine. The protocol that can move value across the most chains, fastest and cheapest, becomes the cheapest place to transact, and cheapness compounds. Liquidity follows the router; the router gets cheaper; more liquidity follows.

So the "interoperability" layer did not stay plural. It concentrated. By early 2026, a single protocol, LayerZero, already carried roughly three-quarters of all cross-chain bridge volume and routed about sixty percent of stablecoin transfers between networks.5 Stablecoin issuers noticed where the chokepoint was and moved to own it — Circle acquired the development arm behind a major interoperability network rather than keep renting the rails.6 The pattern repeated upward. The visible chains stayed many. The invisible layer that connected them collapsed toward a handful of firms.

What abstraction enhanced was reach: a user in 2036 can hold any asset and pay anyone, anywhere, instantly. What it obsolesced was the visible intermediary — the correspondent bank, the wire, the branch, even the user's own awareness that a choice was being made. What it retrieved was an older arrangement we thought modernity had buried: the tollkeeper. Not the obvious, regulated chokepoint of the old system — SWIFT and the clearing banks, where at least everyone could see the control points — but the medieval kind. The party who owns the road between the towns and takes a cut of everything that passes, while the towns themselves stay free.

The reversal: a tool for sovereignty becomes a tool of dependency

Push abstraction to its limit and it flips into the opposite of its founding promise.

The promise was self-custody — your keys, your coins, your choices. The limit case is a wallet that makes every choice for you, perfectly, so that choice ceases to be something you exercise. When a routing engine selects the network, the path, and the fee on your behalf, you have not been freed from the decision. You have been removed from it. The decision still happens. Someone still makes it. It simply isn't you.

And the party that makes it is optimizing for its own objectives, which only sometimes align with yours. This is choice architecture in the sense Thaler and Sunstein meant: the design of the environment in which a decision is made reliably steers the outcome, even when every option remains formally available.7 A default is not a suggestion; it is a verdict most people never overturn. A wallet that defaults your value through the routes most profitable to the router has not restricted your freedom. It has made your freedom irrelevant. You can override it. You won't, because overriding requires understanding the very complexity the system was built to hide from you.

That is the trap, and the name we gave the original article was right: abstraction is the trap. The same opacity that makes the system usable makes it unaccountable. Internet plumbing — DNS, the routing protocols — ended up governed by open standards bodies with public processes, however imperfect. The financial plumbing of 2036 is governed by proprietary optimization functions accountable to shareholders. Both are invisible. Only one is answerable.

The leash is real, but it should not be overstated. The 2036 system is genuinely better than the one it replaced — cheaper, faster, open to anyone with a phone. The bridge exploits that defined the early years, when more than two billion dollars drained through cross-chain protocols in 2022 alone, are mostly historical now.8 No one is going back. That is what makes the reversal durable: a cage you would not leave even if the door stood open is the most effective kind.

The lesson

There was a quieter answer, and it lost. Through the late 2020s, a handful of nonprofit efforts built genuinely user-governed routing — slower, more expensive, transparent about its tradeoffs. It worked, technically. It asked people to choose sovereignty over convenience, and people, sensibly, chose convenience, because the convenience was extraordinary. Funding followed the choice. The transparent alternatives raised millions; the abstraction layer raised billions. The market decided, and the market was not lying about what people wanted.

So the lesson is not that abstraction was a mistake. Abstraction is inevitable, and mostly good. The lesson is narrower and more useful, and it generalizes past blockchain to every system now racing to become invisible — the AI agents booking our travel, the models pricing our insurance, the protocols soon to route far more than money:

Invisibility without accountability is just magic, and magic always belongs to the magician. The question to ask of any technology that promises to disappear is not whether it works. It is who holds the controls you can no longer see — and whether, on the day it matters, you are allowed to look.

Blockchain answered that question the expensive way. The next invisible system will be asked it sooner.
